5-10 a day – It’s the Healthy Way
There is string and growing evidence that sufficient consumption of vegetables and fruit helps to prevent many diseases and promotes good health. An adequate daily intake of vegetables and fruits could help prevent chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers. Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating recommends 5-10 servings per day of fruits and vegetables. Currently, we know that New Brunswick children and youth fall short of this recommendation.
To support this objective and to complement the Department of Education’s new healthy food and beverages policy in schools, a healthy food grant program will be installed in middle schools to promote the consumption of vegetables and fruits. This initiative will also develop community links so that fruits and vegetables are more readily available in recreational community facilities such as rinks and pools. A full-time nutritionist will assist in the implementation and delivery of the grant program as well as other nutrition related initiatives.
